How to Update Charts on the Navionics Boating App

As sailors, you and I both know just how important is it to be passage planning using accurate charts, both from a safety point of view and to give you the confidence in your navigation tools.

Thankfully for us Navionics users, on average they make over 5000 updates to their electronic charts every single day. That adds up to hundreds of thousands of chart updates every year.

There’s no getting around how great it is to be able to update your charts at the tap of a finger, rather than having to go and buy new paper charts quite so regularly.

Below is a great video from the team at Navionics which shows you exactly how to update your charts on the Navionics Boating App.

How to Update Your Navionics Charts in The App

As long as you have an active 1 year subscription to the Navionics Boating App, you can update your electronic charts quickly and easily.

To update your Navionics Boating App Charts:

  1. Tap on “Menu” at the bottom of the Chart Viewer screen
  2. Select “Update Maps” from the menu
  3. Confirm the update in the popup that appears on screen

You can use mobile data to update the charts, but you may want to connect to a wifi signal if the update is a large file, of if you’re updating charts for a new region (as these will be larger downloads).

Always make sure that you have updated your charts before planning a new route on the Navionics Boating App.

When I learned to sail and navigate, paper charts were the only option for me to use, and they’re still essential in my opinion. I don’t want to be solely reliant on digital charts (just in case). But boy what a handy tool digital chart plotters are!

Happy sailing!

Hi, I'm James! I started sailing at a very early age here in the UK, and have enjoyed so many opportunities to sail all over the world. I created this website to share the many sailing tips I've leaned over the years, so that you can also discover the joy of sailing with safety and confidence.
